A quiet realization at 40.A couple weeks ago, I turned 40. No party. No big panic or midlife crisis. Only me, alone with a journal, on a quiet Saturday, being honest with myself. Here's the deal... I'm not married. I don't have kids. I haven't seriously dated anyone since my early thirties. Back then, a two year relationship ended, and I didn't take it too well. I beat myself up over it for a long time. Looking back now, the truth is simple: The man I was back then wasn't built for the life I told myself I wanted. My daily habits, my mindset, my whole identity... none of it matched the future I claimed to want. So, I checked out. I threw myself into work. I put relationships on hold and told myself I'd deal with it later. For years, people gave me the same line... "Don't worry, love finds you when you least expect it." Yeah... it SOUNDS nice, doesn't it? Feels comforting... But sitting with my journal this past week, thinking about my health, my recovery, and everything I've rebuilt since late last year, I realized how much that line sets people up to fail. Here's why... You attract who you are, not what you want.Look closely at people who "randomly" meet the right partner out of nowhere. You'll notice something... It wasn't luck. They did the quiet work first. Nobody saw it happen. They cleaned up their health. Got their finances in order. Changed the way they carried themselves and how they spent their time. They built the identity of someone ready for a real relationship, long before the relationship showed up. So when the moment came, they didn't freeze or screw it up. They were already the person who belonged in it. Here's a way to picture this: Think about a thermostat. Crack a window and you'll cool a room down for a few minutes. But close that window and the room drifts right back to whatever the thermostat is set to. You didn't change the room. You only interrupted it for a moment. Most people try to crack the window on their life. They chase a date, a job title, a number on the scale, a bigger paycheck, hoping the outside circumstance sticks. But if your internal thermostat (ahem... your IDENTITY) is still set to the old version of you, everything drifts back. This is why I talk so much about what I call the Core Four...
You can't fix one of these while ignoring the other three. They're wired together. Change how you show up in one area, and the others start moving with it. I've watched this play out in my own life. The bars and late nights that filled my early thirties aren't places the man I'm becoming spends his time. I don't drink anymore, so I'm not out looking for connection at last call. Instead, as my health has come back, I've started spending Sunday mornings at church, browsing bookshops (I LOVE Barnes & Noble!) instead of scrolling my phone, and making trips back to Mexico. I'm putting myself in rooms that match the future I want, not the past I'm leaving behind. I stopped waiting to bump into the right life. I started building the guy who belongs in it. Position yourself before the moment shows up.So here's what I want you to sit with today. If something in your life feels stuck, dating, your career, your energy, your health, stop asking how to get the outcome faster. Start asking where you're positioned. Your simple task for the week: an environment audit. Pick one outcome you say you want in the next year. Then, look back at the last seven days. Where did you spend your time? Who were you around? What rooms were you in, online and off? Ask yourself one question. Is this where the future version of me would spend time? If the answer is no, change one thing this week. Join a new group. Show up somewhere different. Shift your routine, even by the tiniest of actions. You don't need the whole plan figured out today... I mean, that's not an easy task, either way. You need the container first. The content follows after.
